Exploring Music

Margaret Hull, Co-ordinator

This group has 14 members and meets on the first Friday of the month (10 AM) in members’ homes.

Report from 2017:  The program for this year was an exploration of Romantic Music (1810-1910).   Members of the group took turns leading the discussion on composers from this era including Gounod, Rachmaninoff, Schubert, Schumann, Shostakovich, Richard Strauss, Von Weber, and others.   We also discussed books with musical themes and subjects and shared our thoughts on musical news such as the death of Leonard Cohen.  Many of us attended local concerts such as the Guelph Connections series at St George’s Church and Opera presentations at the Galaxy Cinema.

We had several successful opportunities to connect with the second music group. Many members of both groups attended a very pleasant dinner together following the GSO Christmas program at the River Run. In addition, we invited Judith Yan to be a guest speaker at a meeting that was attended by both music groups. We decided to use this as a small fundraiser for the Scholarship Fund and jointly collected $175, which was donated in Judith’s name.  And finally we had one program presented by a member of the second music group.  We look forward to more interactions with these similarly minded women.
