Marilyn is a Canadian with a passion to help our young, especially those challenged by life circumstances. Having lost her mother at two, Marilyn is a teacher, musician and arts enthusiast who yearly inspires 10,000 children across Canada to unlock their potential as leaders through DAREarts’ one-of-a-kind arts education programs. Internationally, through the Children for Peace project, she directed the choir of children from 24 countries at the 100th anniversary of the Nobel Peace Prize. She has served on the boards of Opera Atelier, Toronto Senior Strings, The Ontario Speech Foundation, Theatre Orangeville; President of the Esprit Orchestra and Chair of the CD project of the Canadian Opera Company as well as volunteering for many other organizations in the arts, culture and helath. She was awarded the Canadian Meritorious Service Medal by the Governor General in 2003 and both the Queen’s Gold and Diamond Jubilee Medals, and she is the 2013 inductee of the Caledon Walk of Fame along the Trans Canada Trail. In 2014, She was awarded the Women of Courage Award.
Marilyn will be bringing as her special musical guest Juno-nominated musician-educator, Glenn Marais. Originally from South Africa, he has been part of the DAREarts team for over 6 of their 10 years going to northern First Nations communities. The photo by Alan Dunlop shows Glenn (with guitar) and the kids at Webequie FN, heartily singing the song they just finished writing with him called ‘Spirit of the North’.
